New EU Data Protection Regulation Replaces Data Protection Directive

The new European Data Protection Regulation replaces the old Data Protection Directive and its aim is to integrate the current data protection laws in place across the EU member states. This will apply to all business throughout the UK that hold personal data.

In January 2012 the European Commission revealed a draft of its European Data Protection Regulation to replace the previous Data Protection Directive. The new privacy framework is designed to eliminate all the uncertainty created by a patchwork of the data breach notifications faced by businesses.

The Data Protection Directive was created to control the progression of personal data within the European Union. The new European data protection is a “regulation” instead of a “directive” which means it will be directly applicable to all EU member states without a need for national implementing legislation. The new regulation will increase opportunities to do business and ensure personal data is protected for all citizens.
